The Catholic Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness.
Any one of you who is ill should send for the elders of the church, and they must anoint the sick person with oil in the name of the Lord and pray over him. The prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord will raise him up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:14-15)
Can. 998 The anointing of the sick, by which the Church commends the faithful who are dangerously ill to the suffering and glorified Lord in order that he relieve and save them, is conferred by anointing them with oil and pronouncing the words prescribed in the liturgical books.
Ðiều 998 Bằng Bí tích Xức Dầu Bệnh nhân, Giáo hội ký thác các tín hữu yếu đau nguy cấp cho Chúa Kitô đau khổ và vinh hiển, để Ngài xoa dịu và cứu chữa họ. Bí tích Xức Dầu bệnh nhân được cử hành bằng việc xức dầu cho bệnh nhân kèm theo việc đọc những lời đã được qui định trong sách phụng vụ.
Thánh Giacôbê đã viết trong thư của Ngài như sau: "Ai trong anh em phải yếu liệt, hãy mời các vị niên trưởng của Hội Thánh; họ hãy cầu nguyện trên người ấy, sau khi đã xức dầu cho nhân Danh Chúa. Và lời cầu khẩn do tự lòng tin sẽ cứu người liệt, và Chúa sẽ cho hồi phục, và nếu người ấy đã phạm tội, thì cũng sẽ được tha.". (Gia.5,14-15)
The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is for the healing and spiritual strengthening of those who are impaired by sickness or old age. A person who is to undergo surgery may also be anointed. This sacrament is for the sick, and not only the dying, so please request the sacrament when illness is discovered. The presence of loved ones and friends who pray along with the priest is important at the anointing. This sacrament will be celebrated at any time upon request.
